5 Things to Do Immediately After a Car Accident
1. Check for Injuries and Call 911
Your health and safety come first. Check yourself and any passengers for injuries. Even if injuries seem minor, call 911 immediately — some injuries don't present symptoms right away, and a police report is crucial for your claim.
2. Document Everything at the Scene
If you're able to do so safely, take photos of the accident scene from multiple angles. Capture damage to all vehicles, road conditions, traffic signs, and any visible injuries. This evidence can be invaluable later.
3. Exchange Information — But Don't Admit Fault
Get the other driver's name, phone number, insurance information, and license plate number. Be polite but careful with your words. Even saying "I'm sorry" can be used against you later. Stick to the facts when speaking with the other driver and police.
4. Seek Medical Attention Within 24 Hours
Even if you feel fine, see a doctor within 24 hours. Many common accident injuries — whiplash, concussions, internal bleeding — may not show symptoms immediately. A medical record created shortly after the accident strengthens your case significantly.
5. Contact an Attorney Before Speaking to Insurance
Insurance companies are not on your side. Their adjusters are trained to minimize payouts. Before giving any recorded statement, consult with a personal injury attorney who can protect your rights and help you understand the full value of your claim.
The decisions you make in the first 48 hours after an accident often determine the outcome of your case. Don't navigate this alone.
